High quality control is obviously required in the aerospace sector. Each and every part of a vehicle (aircraft, space rocket, …) must be thoroughly inspected to ensure compliance with the norms. These standards are published by organisms such as NADCAP or specified by the manufacturers.

Comparable demands are encountered in the defense industry whose products (missiles, rockets,…) cannot in any way undergo a malfunction.

In both sectors, where guarantee safety and reliability are key, one main challenge is to detect small defects in parts sizing from a few centimetres up to a few metres. Furthermore, special care must be observed when automatic handling of such sensitive parts is used.
